To keep your online shopping safe, card issuers have introduced fraud-prevention services known as 3D Secure. These services include:
-
Verified by Visa (VbV)
-
MasterCard SecureCode (MSC)
Both work in the same way and are designed to protect you against unauthorised use of your card when shopping online.
What Is Verified by Visa?
Verified by Visa is an additional security layer for Visa cardholders. It protects your card with a password that only you know, ensuring that no one else can use your Visa card online.
Here’s how it works:
-
When you shop at participating retailers, a Verified by Visa window will appear at checkout.
-
Your card issuer will ask you to enter your password.
-
Once your identity is confirmed, the purchase will be approved.
If a store does not participate in Verified by Visa, your card will still work as usual, but without the extra password prompt.
How Do I Activate My Card?
-
Many customers have already registered for Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode directly with their card issuer.
-
If you haven’t registered yet, you can usually set it up during your first purchase at a participating retailer.
-
You’ll be asked to create a password in a secure window. For future purchases, you’ll only need to enter that password to verify your identity.
Who Should I Contact for Help?
-
Detailed information about payment authentication is provided by your bank or card issuer.
-
If you encounter issues (e.g. forgotten password, authentication failures), please contact your card issuer directly — we cannot reset or override these services.
